I just mixed mustard and relish – it slaps

I try an unlikely friendship of condiments that makes an appearance on, of all things, a hotdog.

In 2013 I became a self-declared foodie. After a month-long relationship that ended in a rough breakup I needed something to do to fill my Tuesday nights, so I made it my personal mission to take on all daring and sometimes outlandish food combinations for the benefit of you, my readers. Last Tuesday, I stumbled upon something greater than the sum of its parts (and something that might fill the gaping void in my heart): mustard and relish.

Baseball season has just started, so I decided to buy a bleacher seat and galavant down to my local minor league baseball team to root for the ol’ home team. After the third inning I gathered my courage to try one of the $2 promotional hotdogs the stadium was peddling. The cute service worker said that I could help myself to mustard, ketchup, and relish at the condiment cart so I took her up on the offer. My devout readers know I don’t eat ketchup (YUCK!), but relish and mustard – now that’s a, ahem, bold combination. But the service worker was adamant (and cute), so I thought I’d pull up my big boy britches and try it out. Boy did it not disappoint.

First of all, the combo is a gamechanger. The sweetness of the relish, the zing of the mustard, everything balances out perfectly. The consistency is like that of a thick foie gras or chunky peanut butter, which is to say it coats the tongue in pure bliss. The color is a little less than appetizing, but don’t let that deter you. I promise you it’s worth the extra courage you might need to summon.

I’m already thinking I might replicate this on other things like hamburgers or chicken sandwiches. I could even see it working in a pinch as a pasta sauce when you run out of marinara at home (just don’t tell Gordon Ramsey!). You might already even have the necessary ingredients in your fridge to try this heavenly combination out yourself. So what are you waiting for???

Overall, I give this combo 4.5 out of 5 baseballs and it can “Take me out to the ballgame” anytime.
